Walmart Takes Legal Action Against Unions for Disrupting Business ...

5:33 pm ET November 18, 2012

Walmart is taking aim at labor unions by accusing them of illegally ramping up recent walkouts by their employees. Some Walmart workers have been protesting low wages in the past few months and have threatened to walk out on the busiest shopping day of the year, Black Friday.

In the United States, Walmart has no union workers and it?s a small percentage that is protesting. However, the retail giant has moved to take legal action against the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.

Walmart released a letter to the unions which read: ?Over the past year, the UFCW has orchestrated numerous pickets, mass demonstrations, flash mobs, and other confrontational activities both inside and outside Walmart facilities ? These have caused disruptions to business ? and created an uncomfortable environment and undue stress on Walmart?s customers, including families with children.?

Defense attorney David Schwartz said on America?s News HQ, ?Last time I checked, in this country we do have a First Amendment right to picket.? He charged that Walmart?s low wages and low prices have ?destroyed? families and ?ruined the middle class.?

Former prosecutor Joey Jackson pointed out that 1.4 million people in this country work for Walmart and their turnover rate is less than the national average in that industry. ?If they?re so horrible of a company, why do people continue to work for them?? he asked.
