Serendipity | YOUNG CAREER TRAVELER

?

Sometimes my motivation comes from inspiration, like when I was texting my friend and she said something that has?now become?my personal mantra.? Other times, it?s more of a wake up call.? That?s exactly what happened when my uncle sat me down one weekend and said, ?I?ve been meaning to tell you something. Do you have a minute??? I prepared myself for a lecture or criticism. Instead, I got a wake up call in the form advice, which helped to set me back on the path of being a career traveler.

My uncle is an entrepreneur and proceeded to give me some advice starting my own business.? Little did he know that I had been struggling with that very issue?since I?had the idea of? becoming a full-time traveler but didn?t know how to fund it.? As you know, I?m hoping that this blog eventually fund that dream because I enjoy entertaing, sharing and traveling. But blogging as a business is?very different than? typing up some musings and treating your blog like an online diary.? Although the internet is full of resources, there?s so much conflicting, confusing and?agressively marketed?information about blogging as a business.? Add?a busy life to the equation, and I became overwhelmed and threw in the towel.?

I was cautiously thinking about picking up blogging again before he started talking to me that day.? I shared my frustrations and dead ends with him and after encouraging me to continue down the blogging path he told me how serendipity played a roll in his success and countless other?s.? He said that if I followed some simple steps like saving money to invest in my future business, educating myself, and started working in the right direction then serendipity would kick in and I?d have ideas, people and opportunities come to me.? Normally, I take feel good advice like?it?ll all work out in the end? or ?do what you love and the money will find you??with a grain of salt. ?Afterall, there are countless out of work actors and entertainers who would beg to differ.?But I believed my uncle.? He has the success to prove it and he also has my best interest at heart.

I followed his advice and a few weeks later serendipity showed up.? I checked the savings account that my uncle advised me to start. I had enough for a flight.? The thought crossed my mind that?a blogging vacation?would be a great way to begin blogging again.??Then an even better idea popped into my mind.?Why not add another dimension to it by getting some education on blogging at the same time?? That immediately sent me searching for blogging conferences and I found one that I?d like to go to in a few more months, which will give me time to save for the hotel, registration and spending money.? While looking through comments on the conference website (because I?m not spending my hard on cash on just any old conference sight unseen), I found two bloggers.? One travels full-time? in a quest to learn a new language in 3 months and the other one blogs about blogging (yes, that?s a thing).? Both of their websites were incredibly helpful.? I was so excited and inspired that I texted my friend.? And she replied with something that caused a subtle but significant paradigm shift.? You can read about that here.?

And the happy accidents haven?t stopped.? Just yesterday I got an 80% of Groupon for the certification I?ll need to teach English abroad while I travel?and continue getting this blog off the ground.?

I know many of you enjoy reading about my trips and my journey to becoming a career traveler, but you don?t necessarily want to become career travelers yourselves.? There?s nothing wrong with that.? But serendipity can still play a roll in your travels.? It happens when you make a wrong turn and find the best restaurant of your life, or when a perfect stranger gives you a tip on what to see or do on your trip.? Maybe it?s just random dumb luck.? Or maybe Elizabeth Berg was right: sometimes serendipity is just intention unmasked.? So stay positive in your travels and don?t pack your bags so tightly that you don?t leave room for some serendipity.
