updated 7:57 p.m. ET Nov. 29, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) - Former U.S. women's national team general manager Cheryl Bailey will serve as the executive director of the new U.S. Soccer-led women's league that will begin play next year.

U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati announced the appointment Thursday.

"Cheryl was a highly regarded employee for U.S. Soccer during her time with the women's national team and she has the perfect skill set and experience to help get this league up and running," Gulati said.

Bailey was the general manager of the U.S. women's national team from 2007-2011.

"It was a wonderful experience to be a part of the women's national team for five years and see firsthand the impact that women's soccer players can have as role models," Bailey said. "The new league is another extension of that and a vitally important part of the continued growth of the sport in the United States."

The eight-team league will have teams in Boston, Chicago, New Jersey, Portland, Seattle, Kansas City, western New York and Washington.

Water and ice on Mercury: Ice and organic material may have been carried to planet by passing comets

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Mercury, the smallest and innermost planet in our solar system, revolves around the sun in a mere 88 days, making a tight orbit that keeps the planet incredibly toasty. Surface temperatures on Mercury can reach a blistering 800 degrees Fahrenheit -- hot enough to liquefy lead.

Now researchers from NASA, MIT, the University of California at Los Angeles and elsewhere have discovered evidence that the scorching planet may harbor pockets of water ice, along with organic material, in several permanently shadowed craters near Mercury's north pole.

The surprising discovery suggests to scientists that both ice and organic material, such as carbon, may have been deposited on Mercury's surface by impacts from comets or asteroids. Over time, this volatile material could then have migrated to the planet's poles.

"We thought the most exciting finding could be that this really was water ice," says Maria Zuber, the E.A. Griswold Professor of Geophysics in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, and a member of the research team. "But the identification of darker, insulating material that may indicate complex organics makes the story even more thrilling."

Zuber and her colleagues published their results this week in the journal Science.

Mounting evidence for ice

The possibility that water ice might exist on Mercury is not new: In the 1990s, radar observations detected bright regions near Mercury's poles that scientists believed could be signs of either water ice or a rough planetary surface. However, the evidence was inconclusive for either scenario.

To get a clearer picture of Mercury's polar regions, Zuber and her colleagues analyzed observations taken by NASA's MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) mission, a probe that has been orbiting the planet and mapping its topography since April 2011.

Mapping the planet's surface is a challenging task, as the craft must weather the sun's intense radiation, which can "play havoc with electronics," Zuber says. What's more, the probe moves from pole to pole in an elliptical orbit, making for an extremely tricky mapping mission, both dynamically and thermally. Despite these challenges, MESSENGER's onboard laser altimeter has amassed more than 10 laser pulses that have been used to map topography and measure the near-infrared reflectance of the surface.

Last year, researchers analyzed the probe's topographic observations and created a high-resolution map of Mercury; they then overlaid previous radar observations. They found that the bright regions detected in radar lined up with permanently shadowed craters at the planet's north pole -- regions that never see the sun, and which are potentially ideal places for ice to survive. This finding was one more piece of evidence that Mercury might harbor water ice.

Revealing shadows

In this latest analysis of MESSENGER's observations, scientists believe they have found conclusive evidence for water ice on Mercury, although the data was at first puzzling.

The team found that the probe's reflectance measurements, taken via laser altimetry, matched up well with previously mapped radar-bright regions in Mercury's high northern latitudes. Two craters in particular were bright, both in radar and at laser wavelengths, indicating the possible presence of reflective ice. However, just south of these craters, others appeared dark with laser altimetry, but bright in radar.

The observations "threw us off track for a long time," Zuber says, until another team member, David Paige of UCLA, developed a thermal model of the planet. Using MESSENGER observations of Mercury's topography, reflectance and rotational characteristics, the model simulated the sun's illumination of the planet, enabling precise determination of Mercury's temperature at and below the surface.

Results indicated that the unusually bright deposits corresponded to regions where water ice was stable at the surface; in dark regions, ice was stable within a meter of the surface. The dark insulating material is consistent with complex organics that would already be dark but may have been darkened further by the intense radiation at Mercury's surface.

In addition, MESSENGER's neutron spectrometer detected elemental hydrogen in the vicinity of Mercury's north pole. The combination of the compositional, spectral and geometric observations and the thermal models provided a strong, self-consistent explanation for the unusual radar backscatter observations.

Paul Lucey, a professor of geophysics and planetology at the University of Hawaii, points out that MESSENGER has also revealed a number of regions where surfaces were much darker than in previous radar measurements. Lucey interprets these results as possible evidence of receding ice on Mercury's surface.

"This suggests that in the past, ice was more extensive on Mercury, and retreated to its current state," says Lucey, who was not involved in the research. "Even Mercury experiences global warming."

MESSENGER will continue to orbit Mercury, and Zuber says future data may reveal information beyond the planet's surface. "There are still some really good questions to answer about the interior," Zuber says. "I'll tell you, we're not done."

'East Coast Rapist' Aaron Thomas Pleads Guilty To Virginia Attack And Abduction

LEESBURG, Va. -- A Connecticut man who police believe is responsible for a series of sexual assaults along the East Coast pleaded guilty Thursday to a 2001 rape and abduction in Virginia, marking the first conviction in the attacks spanning more than a decade.

Aaron Thomas of New Haven faces two potential life sentences after he entered the guilty pleas in Loudoun County Circuit Court to one count of rape and one of abduction with intent to defile.

Thomas had been scheduled to enter a guilty plea earlier this month in Prince William County for raping two teenage trick-or-treaters on Halloween 2009, but the deal fell through after Thomas told a judge he didn't know what he was doing.

Thursday's hearing faced road bumps of its own, when a teary, shackled Thomas cried out "I don't know what's going on here and I don't know what I'm doing" in response to a judge's question about the plea. But he ultimately accepted responsibility, pleading guilty in a barely audible voice. A third, lesser count was dropped as part of the plea deal.

Thomas underwent a mental health evaluation after being transferred to Virginia to face charges. A court-appointed evaluator concluded he was faking symptoms of insanity.

Part of the evidence against Thomas included a letter of apology he wrote shortly after his arrest last year to the woman he raped in Leesburg, threatening her with a screwdriver.

In the letter, written after he was interviewed by detectives, Thomas wrote "I did not want to hurt you I just have a bad emotional sex problem that I could not control (sic)." He concluded, "Sorry 4 hurting you emtionaley (sic) because I have problems with my self."

Thursday's guilty plea was the first conviction in any of the cases linked to the man police dubbed the East Coast Rapist. He is scheduled for a second plea hearing Friday in Prince William County.

Loudoun County Commonwealth's Attorney Jim Plowman said he was glad that the guilty plea would spare the victim from having to testify at a trial. She will be able to testify at Thomas' sentencing about the effect the crime has had on her life.

Plowman declined to say Thursday whether he will seek a life sentence.

Thomas was arrested in Connecticut in March 2011 after a multi-state law enforcement effort to catch a man believed responsible for rapes and other attacks on 17 women since 1997 in Maryland, Virginia, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

The cases were linked by DNA and other evidence.

Stocks gain on hopes for a deal to avoid 'cliff'

(AP) ? Stocks gained on signs that lawmakers are edging toward a deal that would help the U.S. avoid the "fiscal cliff."

Indexes shrugged off an early loss and rose in afternoon trading Wednesday. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 106.98 points at 12,985.11. It had been down as much as 112 points in early trading.

The Standard and Poor's 500 was up 10.99 points at 1,409.93. The Nasdaq composite rose 23.99 points to at 2,991.78.

Huge tax increases and spending cuts will come into effect Jan. 1 if no deal on the U.S. budget is reached. Economists say the measures could push the country back into recession. President Barack Obama said he believed both parties can reach a "framework" on a debt-cutting deal before Christmas, while House Speaker John Boehner told reporters that he was optimistic a deal could be reached, according news outlets including CNBC.

Craig Johnson, a Minneapolis, Minn.-based technical market strategist at Piper Jaffray, said lawmakers realize that there is too much at stake to allow the deadline to pass.

"I don't think that anybody in Washington is going to do something so draconian, or so negative, that we're going to trigger a recession," Johnson said. "There will be some compromise."

Concern that the U.S. will go over the fiscal "cliff" has weighed on stocks since the Nov. 6 elections returned a divided government to power, with President Barack Obama staying in the White House and Republicans retaining control of the House.

Uncertainty about a possible increase in capital gains taxes has been prompting investors to sell stocks, said Johnson.

As the third-quarter corporate earnings period draws to a close, investors and traders have become increasingly fixated on the negotiations to cut the budget deficit. Before Wednesday's gain, the market slumped Tuesday after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he was frustrated by the lack of progress in talks. The two moves canceled each other out, leaving both the Dow and the S&P 500 little changed for the week.

"We're all on pins and needles waiting for every bit of news, or rumors, coming out of Washington," said Ryan Detrick, a Cincinnati, Ohio-based technical analyst at Schaeffer's Investment Research. "That's what Wall Street is focused on. Everybody is watching the fiscal cliff."

Many companies are making special end-of-year dividend payments or moving up their quarterly payouts because investors will have to pay higher taxes on dividend income starting in 2013, unless lawmakers reach a compromise on taxes and government spending.

Costco, the wholesale club operator, surged $6.07 to $102.58 after the company said it would pay a special dividend of $7 a share next month, in addition to its regular quarterly dividend. Las Vegas Sands Corp. rose 5.3 percent Tuesday after the casino operator said it would distribute about $2.26 billion to shareholders before the end of the year. It rose another 1.3 percent Wednesday, gaining 60 cents to $49.96.

With the market's attention focused on the outcome of the "cliff" negotiations, some investors caution that the weakness in third-quarter corporate earnings bode poorly for the stock market.

"Think of corporate earnings as the canary in the coal mine," said Douglas Cote, chief market strategist at ING U.S. Investment Management. "Corporations are the first ones to signal that there is something going on with economic growth around the world."

Company earnings fell 0.9 percent in the third quarter, data provider FactSet said in a report Nov. 23. If they earning finish the period lower, it would mark the first decline in three years.

In economic news, U.S. sales of new homes dipped 0.3 percent in October, though they're up 20.4 percent for the year, according to a government report. Stable home prices suggest the housing market is steadily recovering.

A pickup in consumer spending and steady home sales helped lift economic growth in October and early November in most parts of the United States, the Federal Reserve said in its Beige Book survey released Wednesday. The one exception was the Northeast, which was slowed by Superstorm Sandy.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.63 percent from 1.64 percent.

Among stocks making big moves:

? Green Mountain Coffee Roasters surged $7.91, or 27.3 percent, to $36.86 after the beleaguered coffee company reported strong fourth-quarter results and issued earnings and revenue forecasts that far exceeded the market's expectations.

?Fresh Market Inc. plunged $7.46, or 12 percent, to $52.78, after the company's fiscal third-quarter profit fell short of analysts' expectations.

Duke Tops Ohio State, 73-68: Mason Plumlee Leads No. 1 Blue Devils' Rally (VIDEO)

DURHAM, N.C. -- Mason Plumlee had 21 points and a career-high-tying 17 rebounds, and No. 2 Duke rallied late and held on to beat No. 4 Ohio State 73-68 on Wednesday night.

Freshman Rasheed Sulaimon scored all 17 points in the second half. Ryan Kelly added 15 and hit 3-pointers on consecutive trips downcourt early during the 20-7 run that put the Blue Devils (7-0) ahead to stay and sent them to their third win over a top-five team this month.

Deshaun Thomas scored 16 points for Ohio State (4-1), while Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr. had 11 apiece.

Shannon Scott pulled the Buckeyes within 66-64 with a free throw with 28.9 seconds left before Quinn Cook sealed it by hitting six free throws in the final 27.3 seconds.

Cook finished with 12 points for Duke, which shot 58 percent in the second half to remain unbeaten at home in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and preserve its school-record winning streak at home against nonconference opponents.

The Blue Devils ? who beat then-No. 3 Kentucky in Atlanta and then-No. 2 Louisville in the Bahamas ? won their 97th straight against non-ACC visitors to Cameron Indoor Stadium.

But for much of the way, nothing came easy for them. They were outrebounded 40-37, couldn't get anything going on the offensive glass, struggled to keep up with Ohio State's quick ball movement and couldn't find their touch.

Then came the flurry of 3-pointers that put them in control.

Sulaimon buried one from the key to pull the Blue Devils within 51-50 with about 6 1/2 minutes left. Kelly then hit 3s on consecutive trips down the court, including one in Amir Williams' face that put Duke ahead to stay, 56-53 ? its first lead since the 14-minute mark of the first half.

Plumlee then followed up Cook's missed layup with a dunk that made it 58-54 with 4 minutes left and sent the rowdy Cameron crowd into ear-splitting madness.

Meanwhile, the Buckeyes could do little right down the stretch. With Cook in his face much of the game, Craft finished 3 of 15 from the field. His jumper with just over 3 minutes left was Ohio State's last field goal until Evan Ravenel's dunk with 3 seconds left.

Yet after Cook's first two late free throws, Ohio State had a chance to make it a one-possession game again, but Scott dribbled off his foot with 20 seconds left.

This old building was rocking at levels usually reserved for the annual visit from North Carolina ? although the Buckeyes certainly did their best to hush the place early.

Duke trudged through a decidedly un-Duke-like opening half in which the Blue Devils went 10 minutes between field goals, missed 13 of their final 16 shots, didn't get their first offensive rebound until there were nearly 4 minutes left and were fortunate to only be down 31-23 at halftime.

The Buckeyes generated plenty of open looks by whipping the ball around the perimeter, and when they missed, they gave themselves plenty of second chances. Williams' free throw with 1:13 left put Ohio State up 31-21 ? Duke's first double-digit deficit at home this season. Duke erased its rare 10-point deficit early in the second half with an 11-4 run.

It's time for Small Businesses to embrace search engine friendly ...

Search engine friendly ecommerce is all about building roads on the internet that customers use to get to your site. The enabler is the search engine they choose, such as Google or Yahoo. Most Small Businesses have blogs and you should work on your blog once or twice a week for optimum results and use keywords that describe your business and what products and services you offer. This is really the simplicity of it.

In addition to that and what we are going to be talking most about today is that more and more small-business owners are using Social Media to promote their business. That?s the good news from a survey done by online-marketing firm Vertical Response. Indeed, business owners should be embracing Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. The survey results indicate there are two items that need to be addressed immediately: Tracking results from the use of Social Media and the glaring lack of use of LinkedIn.

While most business owners use Facebook and Twitter, they do so without having any idea of their effectiveness. The most important tool you can use to gauge your internet outreach is Google Analytics. It is chock full of information that will help you refine and tweak your use of Social Media and indeed, your website. In his article, 5 simple metrics to track your Social Media efforts, Jason Miller offers advice and encouragement that will benefit you today.

Jason writes, ?While we all know how important it is to market through the various social networks, it is vital to track and measure your efforts for success.? This is critically true, as more time and money are being spent on Social Media by Small Business as each day passes.

The lack of use of LinkedIn is surprising. Only 6 percent of Small Business people use it, according to the Vertical Response survey. Carol Tice, writing in Forbes magazine, puts it eloquently: ?My experience as a solo owner of my own freelance writing and coaching business is that LinkedIn is the online phone book for hiring solopreneurs. Heavyweight companies do searches on there every day, looking for providers to hire.

Seems foolish not to have a presence on LinkedIn, especially when the platform demands so much less of you than Facebook or Twitter. A weekly status update and maybe a few questions answered or comments made in groups, and you?re good. But only six percent of owners said they?re on LinkedIn once a week and others were there even less.?

So, it?s very important to establish and maintain both your ecommerce site as well as your Social Media presence. Effectively doing so will grow your business, perhaps in ways you?ve not thought of.

At AbleCommerce, we can assist merchants with ecommerce software and hosted sites beyond your wildest dreams. Contact us and let?s have a discussion about it today.

Rice continues to lose ground with skeptical senators

ABC News' Sunlen Miller and Rosalyn Oshmyansky report:

Day two of Susan Rice's charm offensive on Capitol Hill brought little support for the U.N. ambassador to become the next secretary of state if nominated by President Obama.

After meeting privately with Rice this morning, moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said she still had questions about the embassy attack in Libya that "remain troubling" and needed to be answered before she can support Rice for secretary of state.

"I continue to be troubled by the fact that the U.N. ambassador decided to play what was essentially a political role at the height of a contentious presidential election campaign by agreeing to go on the Sunday shows to present the administration's position," Collins said after her meeting with Rice. "I would need to have additional information before I could support her nomination."

By way of comparison, Collins jumped at the opportunity when asked about Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., whose name is also on the short list said to be considered for the next secretary of state.

"I think John Kerry would be an excellent appointment and would be easily confirmed by his colleagues," Collins said.

As for Rice, Collins brought up the 1998 bombing of the two U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya when Rice was the assistant secretary for African Affairs. The senator said it's troubling that lessons seemed to be missed because so much of what happened in Benghazi "eerily echoes" what happened in the African attacks when Rice was head of the African region for the State Department.

Get more pure politics at ABCNews.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com

"In both cases, the ambassador begged for additional security," Collins said, "and those requests, as in the case of Benghazi, were turned down by the State Department."

Collins said today she asked Rice what role she played in turning down requested security at the two embassies in Africa before the 1998 bombings.

"She [Rice] said she would have to refresh her memory but that she was not involved directly in turning down the requests," Collins said, adding, "but, surely, given her position as assistant secretary for African affairs, she had to be aware of the general threat assessment and of the ambassadors repeated request for more security."

Rice has spent the past two days in meetings on Capitol Hill, specifically requested by her with individual senators who have voiced concern about her potential promotion to secretary of state.

After the morning meeting with Collins, Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., had a private meeting with Rice but declined to say afterward whether he would support Rice if the president nominates her. Corker stressed that he hopes Obama will choose someone with independence.

"I would ask the president back step away from all the buzz around this particular situation and take a deep breath and decide who is the best secretary of state for our country," Corker said this afternoon. "Hopefully, it will be someone who shows independence and have the ability to lead this nation and the world."

The senator's careful response stands in direct comparison to comments he made Tuesday in an interview with Foreign Policy magazine in which he said Rice would make a better Democratic National Committee chairwoman than secretary of state, based on what happened in Benghazi and its aftermath.

Corker was more restrained today, saying he'll withhold judgment until someone is nominated and he's able to thoroughly examine that person's credentials in order to make his own determination.

Corker is next in line to the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee so will have a prominent role in the nomination process. He said today that he holds the secretary of state at a higher standard than most cabinet members.

"All of us here hold the secretary of state to a very different standard than most cabinet members," Corker said. "Secretary of state is, no doubt, one of those we want someone of independence. We understand they are going to support the administration and all of their efforts, [but] we want someone who's transparent and direct."

Rice Tuesday met with a vocal and tough crowd of Republican senators: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Sen. Lindsey Graham, R- S.C., and Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H. The three senators said they were more troubled after their meeting with Rice.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, the independent from Connecticut, so far has been the one lone senator to have met with Rice this week and come away with a positive view.

After his meeting Tuesday, Lieberman said he has his questions answered and does not see anything that would disqualify Rice from potentially becoming the next secretary of state, if nominated.

Why My Son Has A Closed Adoption | Portrait of an Adoption

In honor of November being National Adoption Awareness Month, Portrait of an Adoption is running a special series called 30 Adoption Portraits in 30 Days.? Designed to give a voice to the many different perspectives of adoption, this series will feature guest posts by people with widely varying experiences.

By Anonymous

Picture that your little boy - the light of your life - has two relatives who might be politely described as "troubled." ?They dropped out of high school - the male relative at 13- and they drink a lot. ?This is not good, because both their moms are alcoholics.

They both have tempers and the male relative has been arrested several times - once for hitting his own mother.? He might have sexually abused his little sister.? The female relative has borderline personality disorder, which means she is extremely emotional, needy and insecure.

When your little boy was an infant, these relatives spent time with him.? It didn't go well.? One time, when they were supposed to be watching the little boy, they left him naked and lying in his own pee while they went outside for a smoke. Other times they fought with each other in front of the boy. They forgot to change him and feed him.? He came home with his genitals bright red and you still don't know why.

These relatives - this young man and young woman - really love your little boy. They want to see him, spend time with him, get lots of pictures of him and be part of his life.

But you, as his mother, know they are not safe for him to be around.? They are good people at heart, but they are deeply troubled and you fear they might hurt him.? Either physically or psychologically. They say they "won't take him from you," which is horrifying for the very fact that they even brought it up. Their need for your son seems to have little to do with who he IS but instead, what he REPRESENTS to them as a relative.

Frankly, these relatives scare you.? If they weren't related to him, if they were just neighbors down the street, there is no way in hell that you would let your son spend time with them.

Now picture that these are your son's birth parents.

This is why my son has a closed adoption and always will.? His birth parents are not safe and I will do everything in my power to protect him.

I am the mom, the one who takes care of him and I know what's best.? When he is 18 and he wants to seek them out, I won't stop him.? But this is a CLOSED adoption and will remain so.? Blood is one thing, anger and instability is another.

Child welfare workers took this little boy from his teen parents as an infant because they couldn't even handle the first few weeks of his life.? They were charged with neglect.? I won't go into all the specifics.

Child welfare workers kept him away from his birth parents because they couldn't get it together to even visit with him regularly.? The judge favored them at first because they were such young teens - they were given visitation of two times a week, for several hours at a time.

So in a one-year period, they could have seen this lovely little boy more than 100 times.? Do you know how many times they showed up?? In a whole year?? Fourteen.? And that was with social workers driving TO THEIR HOUSE to pick them up.? Often, they just wouldn't get in the van.? Even if the little boy was inside.

For several of those visits, I actually drove my son there and back.? He was my foster baby, they were his birth parents.? I knew I had no rights; I knew the score.? He needed to visit with them; I would help make that happen, even though I loved him, too.

The birth parents met me four times.? They knew I was adopting their son.? After a year of these failed attempts to parent him, they decided not to fight his adoption.? Since he was my foster baby, I got the first say in whether I wanted to adopt him.? Of course I said yes.? Since he was being adopted through foster care, they knew it would be a closed adoption - no contact.

The last time I saw his birth parents was at the courthouse for a hearing. They paused long enough from fighting with each other to talk to me briefly. They asked me to send photos once a year, around his birthday. That was it.

He was supposed to have one final visit with them, for his first birthday.? They cancelled three times.

After a year of dealing with their nuttiness and drama, I was glad to be dome with them.? I didn't send pictures that year.? If they wanted to know how he was, they could have shown up for the visit.

But when his second birthday rolled around, I was feeling guilty.? Open adoptions are much more in vogue these days. ?And I was watching a lot of "Teen Mom" with Caitlyn and Tyler.? My Catholic guilt set in.

I knew their names, hometowns, etc.? So I looked them up on MySpace (this was a couple years ago) and messaged them.? They responded right away.? To protect my son, I never told them my last name, where we live or where I work.? But we chatted about our son and I sent pictures.? Things were okay for a couple months.? They were, surprisingly, still together as a couple.? They had an apartment and he had a job.

Then the craziness reappeared.? She emailed all the time, in a very needy way, not just for our son but for contact with ME.? I felt like I had to mother her, too.? She didn't understand why I wouldn't text her (um, because then she would know my phone number).

By this point, we had switched over to Facebook.? She started complaining, to all her FB friends, about how she "wasn't allowed to see her son."? I emailed and tried to tell her my reasons why: He was still so young and they were still not all that stable.? Her emails got nasty.? They got mean.? I got angry.? She wanted to see him, talk to him, visit him.? She WANTED him.? It became clear to me that not only is she manipulative, but delusional.

I didn't initiate contact for a while. Then after many months, the guilt returned. i was probably watching "Teen Mom" again, or maybe "Juno." So I responded to her emails. They started off fine and then BOOM she unloaded a crap ton of negative emotions and hate onto me.? It was awful and upsetting.? Her reaction should not be surprising, given the instability of her life and her borderline personality disorder diagnosis.

But having that much hate and vitriol directed at me was horrible.? And it made me very, very worried for my son's safety.? From now on, they will get a very brief email once or twice a year, letting them know our son is fine.? But that's it.? That is it.

I know I screwed up by contacting them. I thought it would make this better for them, but instead, I made it worse.? For that, I am sorry and regretful.? I know they are hurting, I do.? But I have to do what's best for this little boy, since they cannot or will not.

They still don't know our last name, where we live or where I work.? But I know his birth mom is always looking for him.? She is on the Internet all day and we live in the same state.? As soon as my son turns 13 and gets a Facebook account (or its future iteration), I know she will be there: BOOM!? Trying to explode into his life.? I am trying to prevent that from happening for as long as I can.

That's why this blog post is anonymous.? It's why he doesn't show up in my Facebook profile pictures.? It's why I refuse permission for his Little League team or his school to post pictures of him online.? It's why I am not telling you his name or age.

I tried to open up our adoption, maybe just a little bit.? And it was a huge mistake.? The state created closed adoptions from foster care for a reason.

I wish we could all be one happy family.? I envy Carrie's relationship with M (the Portrait of an Adoption family).? But M is older, got her issues worked out and is not harmful to K.

That is not the case here.? I will never badmouth his birth parents to him.? He has seen their photos and I answer whatever basic questions he has.? But he hasn't had many.? When he is 18, he can read my huge, thick file of his records from the state, including his birth parents' full names etc.

But while he is underage, I will protect him and keep him safe. Even from his own relatives.

7 HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIPS | Barbara Friedberg Personal Finance

And Wealth Building Links

Sales abound. Commercials entice. Shopping is in the air.

I like to shop as much as the next. I get swayed by advertisers too! In fact after swearing against buying an iPhone, iPad, or eReader I succumbed to a tablet for my holiday present. True confession; the Samsung Galaxy was on sale for $179, cheaper than the iPad and Kindle Fire I was checking out! And I?ve had fun with the ?toy? downloading apps, playing games, and reading my favorite books. It turns out, it is a great gift. (Okay, so I opened it a bit before the Chanukah?holiday begins.)

Gifts, indulgences and holidays are some of the important things that make life worth living. They build a wealthy life, it?s not only about the money. It?s important to celebrate the joys of life. Where the celebrations go awry are when they go beyond your pocketbook and put you in debt.

Follow these simple tips to celebrate without breaking the bank.

Cheap holiday gift

Beautiful and Affordable Gift

HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIPS:

  1. Figure out who?s on the list. Make sure you?re not giving to impress but for a genuine reason.
  2. Create a reasonable spending budget for the holiday. If you can?t pay for your spending within the month or two, cut back the list and/or the holiday budget.
  3. Match a dollar amount to the recipients? gifts. For office friends we usually go to the dollar store, buy a bunch of beautiful containers ($1 each), buy big bags of candy, clear wrapping paper, and ribbon. Place candy in the containers wrap and tie with a ribbon. Each gift costs less than $2 each. Write a meaningful card to show you care!
  4. For the kids; big gifts don?t equal love. Give what you can afford and teach the children the holidays are more than just indulgence. Make sure to show the kids how to give to the less fortunate. Donate toys and coats to the holiday drives.
  5. Shop for sales and know the regular prices so you recognize a deal. You still have a few weeks until the holidays so take it slow. Don?t make the holidays a strain, enjoy the time of year and remember what the season is really about.
  6. Make a list-and stick to it.
  7. ?If it?s not on the the list, don?t buy!

Enjoy the Season

Energy efficient windows ? Home Improvement: House Plans

November 20th, 2012 by admin Leave a reply ?

I must change the windows of my home. My old windows aren't bad looking. But although they go well with the house and I still like them, they are lacking the much needed energy efficiency. Heating and cooling my home takes five times longer than it is supposed to. I talked to the contractor that I always use, and after inspecting them, he told me that is time for windows upgrade. Because I really like the window design I have, I went in search for the similar window style only with a better energy efficiency index. I found something that looks promising at the Nitro Windows store my next door neighbor suggested. I?ll see soon enough how they will do.?

Rene's gift picks: 2012 holiday guide

Rene's gift picks: 2012 holiday guide

This season we're asking everyone here at iMore to share some of their favorite gift ideas. Sure, there'll be iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps and accessories included on everyones' lists, just as you'd expect, but there'll also be other stuff, great, geeky, gorgeous other stuff that's as multi-facted and fun as the people themselves. I'm up first, and don't be surprised if I hit every cliche in the nerd handbook. Hard. With an Uru hammer.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

I read this book at least once a year. Often several times. It was written in the 80s and served as the inspiration for everything from Tim Burton's Batman to Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, to Batman: The Animated, to... you get the idea. It's safe to say almost every incarnation of The Batman since then has been informed by Frank Miller's story of Batman's end. The story is a tad fascist but the dialog is among the best ever put to word balloon, and the character among the best ever done in any form. If someone you love loves the Batman, and hasn't read The Dark Knight Returns, you need to fix that. Now. (Part 1 of the story has recently been released as a animated movie, with part 2 due in January. They stupefyingly chose not to include the killer inner monolog from the book, but they nailed almost everything else.)

Screens

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean my computers aren't out to get me. I render a lot of video and that takes a lot of time, and I don't want to be slaved to my Mac while it's crunching all those codecs, but nor do I want it to error out the moment I remove it from my cold, steely glare. So I use apps to keep track of what's going on, whether I'm across the room, or across town. For light stuff -- if I just want to make sure all the cores are grinding away on all the things -- I use iStat 2. It's every bit of monitored data I need in on slickly packaged app. For more detailed stuff, including for times when I have to take over my Mac with an iPhone or iPad and fix those things, I use Screens. It just works. From table side or pool side, I can pull up my Macs over VNC, see exactly what's going on, and use them about as well as multitouch allows. Which is pretty well. If you have an IT geek who needs a gift, or really anyone who'd like the freedom to control their Mac or Windows PC from anywhere, get them Screens.

Netflix

I'm still watching Netflix quite a bit. Mostly on the Apple TV, but occasionally on the iPad and the iPhone as well. While the Global, CTV, and Citytv apps remain my source for new TV programming, and iTunes for movies, Netflix is where I go for back catalog. Sometimes it's movies or TV shows I simply missed when they first aired, and sometimes it's stuff I really enjoyed and want to watch again. There's a ton of stuff, from action to comedy, for adults and kids alike. And while the Netflix app itself is free, the service requires a subscription. That makes it a great gift, and since you can choose to gift it for 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, or an entire year, you can make as small or as big a gift out of it as you like.

Griffin PowerJolt Dual

I use my iPhone and iPad mini a lot. And that means I need to charge them a lot. Sometimes both of them at the same time. At conferences, I've been using the mophie juice pack powerstation duo But for when I'm in the car, it's the Griffin PowerJolt Dual. Just put it in your car's adapter, plug two Lightning cables in, and you can charge two devices -- yours, or a friend, family member, or co-worker's. It means never fighting for a charge again, either between people or devices. If you've got someone in your life who's always on the go, and multiple devices need to go with them, the Girffin PowerJolt Dual is a great gift.

Tonx Coffee

I found out about Tonx from Daring Fireball's John Gruber and subscribed immediately). If you know someone who loves -- really loves -- great coffee, they likely already have a burr grinder, cheap or expensive and a French press or an AeroPress But what they might not have easy access to is freshly roasted beams to burr grind and brew to perfection. That's where Tonx comes in. Every other week, Tonx ships you a bag of beans that have been roasted within the last 24 hours. If there aren't many people in your household, or you don't drink that much coffee, you can get them a 6 oz. bag. If there are a lot of people, or you drink a lot of coffee, you can get them a 12 oz. bag. Either way, it's best damn coffee gift for the coffee lover in your life.

  • Starting at whatever you like - Buy now

The iPad mini

So what do you think of your iPad mini?

You knew it had to be on here, right? From the moment I got my iPad mini and my 4 year old godson tried at it and said "Oh, an iPad my size!", and my mother picked it up and smiled at how light it was, I knew I'd be giving away more than one this year. Sure, it's on the pricier end of the gift-giving spectrum, but I'll be chipping in with other family members and that makes it more than manageable. And you know what? No one who wants one or is getting one gives a flying fig about Retina display. So if someone in your life has been holding out for a small tablet, seriously, don't waste your time with the cheap stuff. Get together and get iPad minis. Everyone will be glad you did, and for months and years to come.

Your gift picks?

So that's what I'll be gifting this season to more than a few friends, family, and colleagues. (Spoilers! D'oh! Sorry!) How about you? What apps, accessories, media, food, and fun stuff comprise your favorite gifts this year?

Is scrapbooking dead or just transforming into digital storytelling ...

Yesterday the folks at Ancestry.com retweeted an interesting article that asked was scrapbooking dead. The article included a video that at first would make you think so . . . until it got to the part discussing the amazing alternative ? photo books.

I don?t think scrapbooking is dead, but I do see it as one component in the broader category of digital storytelling. I love a beautifully embellished page, but I?m more interested in how it can support the story than in having the design be the story. Technology has given us so may different ways to present our family stories ? current families as well as past ones ? that there?s something for everyone at just about any skill level or any budget.

I love to use digital scrapbook elements in my family history projects. They add atmosphere to the project, help direct the reader?s eye to the areas I want them to see and spotlight specific photos. I would love to do more, but unfortunately there are two major issues in my way.

The first issue is their terms of use. I don?t think the designer community realizes there is a market looking for graphic elements to embellish family history publishing projects. We ?personal publishers? spend a lot of time, effort and money writing and designing all kinds of family history projects and want to get the most exposure possible to attract research cousins ? and yes, even make some money from our efforts. The terms of use on most digital scrapbooking products consider or projects as commercial use and either reject using their products for these purposes or charge significantly more for those rights. The digital storytellers in the genealogy community fit somewhere in the gray area between the traditional scrapbook market and commercial photography/scrapbook markets that have been the designers? focus. We could become a significant market for their work if they would make some adjustments to better support us.

One other area where designers could better support digital storytellers is with more size flexibility. Digital storytellers are creating books, ebooks, multimedia presentations and movies. Our proportions are rectangular, not square. You design beautiful templates and backgrounds, but we often can?t use them. We?re displaying our work on computers and tablets and digital frames and even television screens and would love to fill up those screens with photos and text.

Square just is to . . . square.

One last thought that may help push you towards including us in your marketing efforts. Family historians are fixated on acknowledging their sources. You can be sure we?ll give you the credit you deserve.

Follow These Tips For Successful Internet Marketing | Search ...

Marketing is heading in the direction of the Internet and will be around for years to come. These tips can help you earn more profits.

TIP! Always use clear, high quality pictures that show off the products your site is selling. Your customers need to be able to visualize the items they are about to buy, and see the detail of your high-quality products.

When you are using signatures, link them to your site or email. When you use an auto signature, make sure the link is in it because every time you post, you link. For your emails, set up an automatic signature that also includes your website link. This technique is one method to encourage people to visit your website without having to give them a sales pitch. It increases the traffic to your site and your page rank. Something that catches the reader?s attention and makes them want to click the link is a great addition.

TIP! Small business owners may find it difficult to compete with the big guys on the Internet. You can make your business more competitive by frequently resetting the prices of your products, and comparing them against those of your closest competitors.

If the potential customers you are reaching out to with an Web marketing campaign are interested in charitable donations, direct a percentage of your profits to an appropriate charity. Write about the charity you chose to support and explain to your customers how their purchase is going to make a difference. You do not have to give up a huge amount in order to impress customers.

TIP! Get the word out your business through ads anywhere you can on the Internet, particularly high traffic sites. This type of advertising will help more people become aware of your site and help your business grow.

Advertising is necessary for an online business. Advertising is an important marketing tactic that is worth the money spent on it because it is a solid way to increase your sales. This is a great tool to reach customers who may not have found you otherwise.

TIP! Some say that you need to know about both arts and sciences to succeed in an internet marketing campaign. Before you engage in Internet marketing, you should try to grasp both sides of the coin.

One way to use Internet marketing is to link it with the charity of your choice. Let your customers know that a certain percentage of each sale goes towards aiding your selected charity. Your image will improve and the charity gives you free advertising. If you want, support more than one charity and let customers choose which one they want to support.

TIP! Find some service or product that you can give free-of-charge to those who visit your site. People will stop by just for the free stuff, but sometimes they do stay longer if something on the site appeals to them.

Keep detailed analytical information. This includes web traffic, referrals, sales and any other stats you can think of. Keeping accurate records will ensure that you take proper action whenever the need arises.

TIP! Though Internet marketing is a road to success, supplement it with a direct marketing strategy as well. Contact customers by fax, phone, or email and tell them about your specials and services.

Advertise your products as ?limited? or ?special? editions. Owning exclusive items are all the rage and people are more likely to purchase products from you if they feel what they are receiving is special or limited in number.

TIP! Add personal details to your campaign. Post your real picture and name to your website.

The internet has obscured much of what occurs behind the scenes at many businesses. This is an especially effective tool for small and independently owned businesses who rely on personal selling and relationship marketing to create customers for life.

When you are first setting up your site, do not try to do everything at once. Search engines may jump over a site with too many index pages.

TIP! Evaluate the actual merits of your the product or service you are marketing. If your product is sub-par, no amount of Internet marketing will change that.

Using available software and technology is a major foundation of Website marketing. When your company stops updating itself, your clients may start trusting you less. Make sure that you are updated on new technologies, and your customers will respect your products and the decisions that you make.

TIP! Use the emphasis tags that HTML provides when creating your website copy. Change up words or phrases by changing fonts or using bold or italics.

As you have learned, increasing your knowledge on Online marketing can really take you far. Your profits will climb now that you know what to do with these web marketing suggestions. You will also be able to employ your own techniques. If you can make use of the information presented here, you may be well on your way to increased profits.

Ex-hedge fund trader charged in $276M insider ploy

NEW YORK (AP) ? A former hedge fund portfolio manager was arrested Tuesday in what prosecutors are calling perhaps the most lucrative insider trading scheme of all time ? an arrangement to obtain confidential, advance results of tests on an experimental Alzheimer's drug that helped investment firms make more than $276 million.

Mathew Martoma, 38, was charged in U.S. District Court in Manhattan with using the information to advise a hedge fund owner to buy shares in the companies developing the drug, then later to dump those investments and place financial bets against the companies when the tests returned disappointing results.

Martoma's trades helped reap a hefty profit from 2006 through July 2008, while he worked for CR Intrinsic Investors LLC of Stamford, Conn., an affiliate of SAC Capital Advisors, a firm owned by Steven A. Cohen, one of the nation's wealthiest hedge fund managers.

"The charges unsealed today describe cheating coming and going," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said at a news conference. The scheme unfolded "on a scale that has no historical precedent."

The government has been scrutinizing SAC since at least November 2010, when the FBI subpoenaed SAC and other influential hedge funds. Martoma is the fourth person associated with SAC Capital to be arrested on insider trading charges in the last four years. A request for comment from SAC was not immediately returned.

The FBI said the scheme developed after Martoma met a doctor in Manhattan involved in an Alzheimer's drug trial in October 2006. According to a criminal complaint, he later obtained confidential information related to the final results of a drug trial.

Martoma's attorney, Charles Stillman, called his client "an exceptional portfolio manager who succeeded through hard work and the dogged pursuit of information in the public domain. What happened today is only the beginning of a process that we are confident will lead to Mr. Martoma's full exoneration."

Martoma was arrested at his home in Boca Raton, Fla., and made an initial appearance in federal court in West Palm Beach, Fla., where he was released on $5 million bail on charges of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and securities fraud. He was scheduled to return to court Monday in Manhattan.

The Securities and Exchange Commission filed civil papers in the case against CR Intrinsic Investors, Mathew Martoma and Dr. Sidney Gilman. The civil complaint said the illegal money was earned in July 2008, when various hedge funds traded ahead of a negative public announcement involving the clinical trial results of an Alzheimer drug being jointly developed by Elan Corp. and Wyeth.

The SEC complaint said that Martoma carried out the scheme with Gilman, a professor of neurology at the University of Michigan Medical School who served as chairman of a safety committee overseeing the clinical trial. Gilman was selected by Elan and Wyeth to present the final clinical trial results at a July 29, 2008, medical conference.

Messages left with the University of Michigan Medical School were not immediately returned.

Gilman's lawyer, Marc Mukasey, said his client is cooperating with the SEC and the U.S. Attorney's Office, and has entered into a non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors.

Bharara said Martoma gained from "cultivating and corrupting" Gilman, eventually receiving $9 million in bonus pay for the year when the trades were made.

The prosecutor said Martoma arranged beginning in the summer of 2006 through an expert networking firm to meet with the doctor about 42 times, eventually convincing him to start talking about the drug trial.

The SEC said leaks by Martoma caused hedge fund portfolios managed by CR Intrinsic and by an affiliated investment adviser to liquidate more than $700 million in holdings in Elan and Wyeth.

The massive repositioning, the SEC said, allowed CR Intrinsic and various hedge funds to collective reap illicit profits and avoid losses of more than $276 million.

"By cultivating and corrupting a doctor with access to secret drug data, Mathew Martoma and his hedge fund benefited from what might be the most lucrative inside tip of all time," Bharara said.

The prosecutor said the doctor sent him a draft of the 24-page presentation he planned to make at a conference announcing the results.

"And that is when Martoma had to do a spectacular about-face because he understood that ? with these negative results looming ? the hedge fund's massive $700 million stake had become a terrible bet," Bharara said. "And so, just like that, overnight, Martoma went from bull to bear as he tried to dig his hedge fund out of a massive hole."

The news caused Elan's stock price to plunge by more than 40 percent while the price of Wyeth fell about 12 percent.

A year later, a hedge fund employee recommended that Martoma be terminated and he was let go in 2010, Bharara said.

April Brooks, head of the New York FBI office, said the arrest was a continuation of the FBI's five-year campaign against insider trading and that no end was in sight.

"What we see again is an unholy alliance between an insider willing to divulge valuable non-public information, and a money manager to whom that information is as good as gold," she said.
