Japanese disaster films highlight victims' stories

TOKYO (AP) ? The unnerving clicks of dosimeters are constant as people wearing white protective gear quickly visit the radiated no-go zones of decayed farms and empty storefronts. Evacuees huddle on blankets on gymnasium floors, waiting futilely for word of compensation and relocation.

Such scenes fill the flurry of independent films inspired by Japan's March 2011 catastrophe that tell stories of regular people who became overnight victims ? stories the creators feel are being ignored by mainstream media and often silenced by the authorities.

Nearly two years after the quake and tsunami disaster, the films are an attempt by the creative minds of Japan's movie industry not only to confront the horrors of the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, but also to empower and serve as a legacy for the victims by telling their stories for international audiences.

The impact these films have on the global and Japanese audiences could perhaps even help change Japan, the directors say.

What's striking is that many of the works convey a prevailing message: The political, scientific and regulatory establishment isn't telling the whole truth about the nuclear disaster. And much of the public had been in the past ignorant and uncaring about Fukushima.

And so the films were needed, the auteurs say. The people leading Japan were too evasive about the true consequences of the multiple meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant ? minimizing people's suffering, playing down health risks and shrugging off accountability for past go-go pro-nuclear government policies.

"Japan's response is ambiguous and irresponsible. But, meanwhile, time is passing," said Atsushi Funahashi, director of "Nuclear Nation," which documents the story of the residents of Futaba, Fukushima, the town where the crippled nuclear plant is located.

The entire town became a no-go zone ? contaminated by radiation in the air, water and ground after the tsunami destroyed the plant's cooling systems, causing meltdowns in three reactors. Decommissioning the reactors is expected to take decades.

Of all Fukushima communities forced to evacuate, Futaba chose the farthest spot from the nuclear plant ? an abandoned high school in Saitama prefecture, near Tokyo. That choice Funahashi feels highlights a keen awareness of the dangers of radiation and distrust of officials as the town had been repeatedly told the plant was safe.

The outburst of post-disaster filmmaking includes Americans living in or visiting Japan, such as "Surviving Japan," by Christopher Noland, "Pray for Japan," by Stuart Levy, and "In the Grey Zone" and "A2" by Ian Thomas Ash.

"The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom," by Lucy Walker, a Briton, was nominated for the 2012 Academy Award for short documentaries.

Both Levy and Noland volunteered in the disaster areas. Ash's documentaries focus on the plight of the children who continue to live near the nuclear plant and the frightened mothers who suspect the medical authorities are lying about the safety of radiation.

"I believe it is time for Japanese citizens to not just rebuild but reinvent their country with new leadership," said Noland, who like many others worries about the children. "I want the people of Japan to know I stand with them."

Funahashi's "Nuclear Nation," shown at film festivals including Berlin, Seoul and Edinburgh, Scotland, intentionally played out its scenes in real time to communicate the helplessness of the days slipping away for displaced people. Camera close-ups show the cold lunches in boxes being handed out, day by day.

Funahashi is outraged that, so many months later, the Japanese government has yet to properly compensate the 160,000 people who had to leave their homes near Fukushima Dai-ichi. The government has set up tiny temporary housing and has doled out aid calculated to approximate the minimum wage.

In one moving scene in "Nuclear Nation," one of the displaced residents, Masayoshi Watanabe, lights up a cigarette in a car and talks directly into the camera, strangely more movie-like than any Hollywood actor.

"Our town is gone. It's just land," he says pensively.

The movie started with 1,400 people in the school building, but that has dwindled lately to about 100. Funahashi is determined to keep filming until the last person leaves.

"The evacuated people are being forgotten," said Funahashi. "And criminal responsibility is also being forgotten."

Reputed director Sion Sono has also written and directed the sarcastically titled "The Land of Hope," departing from his usual ruthlessly violent avant-garde for a soap-operatic account of an elderly couple who commit suicide after a nuclear catastrophe set in the fictitious future.

Sono's "Himizu," a haunting coming-of-age film set in a surreal Japan hopelessly covered with tsunami debris, is more typical Sono in its raw dark style, criticizing the adult world as irresponsibly cruel and abusive to this nation's younger generation that must cope with radiation.

Yojyu Matsubayashi took a more standard documentary approach for his "Fukushima: Memories of the Lost Landscape," interviewing people who were displaced in the Fukushima town of Minami Soma.

He followed them into temporary shelters in cluttered gymnasiums and accompanied their harried visits to abandoned homes with the gentle patience of a videojournalist. Japanese mainstream media had abandoned the no-go zone, and he felt it was up to freelance reporters like him to tell the true story, especially for the helpless elderly.

"I've been making documentaries for some time, but when the nuclear accident happened, I felt I had to be there," he said. "Once I got there, I knew I had to be there for a long time and express the eternal from that one spot."

His main message?

He wouldn't have made a movie if it were all that simple, Matsubayashi said quietly.

"It was human arrogance that led to this disaster, this crisis," he said. "We thought we could control even nature. And that's why this happened. Our lives were dependent on electricity from Fukushima. We shouldn't be making excuses that we didn't know, that we didn't care. Maybe that's why I made this movie."

Others are finding their work is drawing more attention after Fukushima.

Hitomi Kamanaka, who has devoted her life to documenting radiation issues, such as the struggles over a Japanese nuclear reprocessing plant and sicknesses in Iraq suspected of being caused by uranium bullets, is in the spotlight like never before.

Her 2012 film "Living With Internal Exposure" compiled the views of four medical experts who studied radiation's effects in Chernobyl, Hiroshima, Iraq and Fukushima, warning about the health damage that radiation can cause.

Akiyoshi Imazeki began shooting "Kalina's Apple, Forest of Chernobyl" in 2003, a film about a girl who falls sick after eating the radiated apples grown on her grandmother's farm. It was a film he believed in, but he had never hoped for massive appeal.

His post-Fukushima 2011 re-edit ? with its juxtaposition of pastoral lakes and forests, so much like Fukushima landscapes, with the forlorn faces of children hospitalized for cancer ? is striking home with many Japanese.

The film was shot quietly like many Japanese classics, and the cast is entirely Belarusian and Russian. But the dozens of screenings in Fukushima are drawing positive reviews.

"They all cry," said Imazeki.

Imazeki is convinced the parallels between Fukushima and Chernobyl are striking, and stressed "Kalina's Apple, Forest of Chernobyl" dramatizes the tragedy of radiation.

"The invisibility adds to the turmoil," he said. "Families can no longer live normal happy lives."

How P&G opened its doors to innovation ? Business Management ...

For generations, Procter & Gamble innovated from within. The giant consumer products company that makes Tide detergent and Crest toothpaste conducted research-and-development veiled in secrecy.

Under A.J. Lafley, P&G?s now-retired CEO, the company?s closed innovation process began to open up. The firm began to partner with universities, suppliers and other companies with the goal of joining forces to create new products.

Lafley initiated this shift in 2000 when he concluded that P&G?s internal labs could not keep pace with fast-changing consumer trends. The company?s huge size also meant its innovation teams needed to keep producing hit after hit just to maintain organic growth targets. This pressure became unsustainable.

As a result, Lafley embarked on a new path. He devised the ?Connect + Develop? initiative in which P&G abandoned its long-standing tradition of relying solely on its own in-house breakthroughs. For the first time, it looked outside for new ideas.

To facilitate such a dramatic turnaround in P&G?s entrenched culture, ?Lafley encouraged employees to look for inventive ideas wherever they could find them. He welcomed key outsiders, from scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratories to entre??preneurs and inventors, to participate in P&G?s once-secretive research discussions. The company even staged online contests in which outside experts could compete to solve technical problems.

In another startling move, P&G and Google exchanged employees for a few weeks in 2008. Lafley?s team gained insight into online marketing while Google learned about building a brand.

Thanks to this new approach, P&G has doubled its innovation success rate while reducing its research-and-development costs. Examples of new products include the highly profitable Swiffer duster (adapted from a product invented in Japan) and Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (licensed from German chemical firm BASF).

Dependant on the application of the lock and the thickness of the door itself, the amount of levers will vary. The more levers that are stacked within the case of the lock, the thicker and safer the lock will be. The more levers utilised means a reduced likelyhood of fitting a standard key in the lock, which is great in terms of security.

Former surgeon general C. Everett Koop dies at 96

C. Everett Koop, who raised the profile of the surgeon general by riveting America's attention on the then-emerging disease known as AIDS and by railing against smoking, has died in New Hampshire at age 96.

An assistant at Koop's Dartmouth institute, Susan Wills, said he died Monday in Hanover, where he had a home. She didn't disclose his cause of death.

Koop wielded the previously low-profile post of surgeon general as a bully pulpit for seven years during the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.

An evangelical Christian, he shocked his conservative supporters when he endorsed condoms and sex education to stop the spread of AIDS.

He carried out a crusade to end smoking in the United States ? his goal had been to do so by 2000. A former pipe smoker, he said cigarettes were as addictive as heroin and cocaine.

Koop's impact was great, although the surgeon general has no real authority to set government policy. He described himself as "the health conscience of the country."

"My only influence was through moral suasion," Koop said just before leaving office in 1989.

By then, his Amish-style silver beard and white, braided uniform were instantly recognizable.

Out of office, he switched to business suits and bow ties but continued to promote public health causes, from preventing childhood accidents to better training for doctors.

"I will use the written word, the spoken word and whatever I can in the electronic media to deliver health messages to this country as long as people will listen," he promised.

In 1996, he rapped Republican presidential hopeful Bob Dole for suggesting that tobacco is not invariably addictive, saying Dole's comments "either exposed his abysmal lack of knowledge of nicotine addiction or his blind support of the tobacco industry."

Although Koop eventually won wide respect with his blend of old-fashioned values, pragmatism and empathy, his nomination in 1981 met a wall of opposition from women's groups and liberal politicians.

Critics said Reagan selected Koop, a pediatric surgeon from Philadelphia, only because of his conservative views, especially his staunch opposition to abortion.

Foes noted that Koop traveled the country in 1979 and 1980 giving speeches that predicted a progression "from liberalized abortion to infanticide to passive euthanasia to active euthanasia, indeed to the very beginnings of the political climate that led to Auschwitz, Dachau and Belsen."

But Koop, a devout Presbyterian, was confirmed after he told a Senate panel he would not use the surgeon general's post to promote his religious ideology. He kept his word.

In 1986, he issued a frank report on AIDS, urging the use of condoms for "safe sex" and advocating sex education as early as third grade.

He also maneuvered around uncooperative Reagan administration officials in 1988 to send an educational AIDS pamphlet to more than 100 million U.S. households, the largest public health mailing ever done.

Koop personally opposed homosexuality and believed sex should be saved for marriage. But he insisted that Americans, especially young people, must not die because they were deprived of explicit information about how the HIV virus was transmitted.

He became a hero to AIDS activists, who chanted "Koop, Koop" at his appearances but booed other officials.

Koop further angered conservatives by refusing to issue a report requested by the Reagan White House, saying he could not find enough scientific evidence to determine whether abortion has harmful psychological effects on women.

Koop maintained his personal opposition to abortion, however. After he left office, he told medical students it violated their Hippocratic oath. In 2009, he wrote Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid urging that health care legislation include a provision to ensure doctors and medical students would not be forced to perform abortions. The letter briefly set off a security scare because it was hand delivered.

Koop served as chairman of the National Safe Kids Campaign and as an adviser to President Bill Clinton's health care reform plan.

At a congressional hearing in 2007, Koop spoke about political pressure on the surgeon general post. He said Reagan was pressed to fire him every day, but Reagan would not interfere.

Koop, worried that medicine had lost old-fashioned caring and personal relationships between doctors and patients, opened an institute at Dartmouth to teach medical students basic values and ethics.

He also was a part-owner of a short-lived venture, drkoop.com, to provide consumer health care information via the Internet. It made its initial public offering of stock in 1999, but expenses outstripped revenue and it was out of business by the end of 2001.

In July 2001, the company agreed to pay $4.25 million in cash to settle lawsuits filed by investors who claimed drkoop.com made false promises. Company officials did not admit wrongdoing.

Koop was born in New York's borough of Brooklyn, the only son of a Manhattan banker and the nephew of a doctor. He said by age 5 he knew he wanted to be a surgeon and at age 13 he practiced his skills on neighborhood cats.

He attended Dartmouth College, where he received the nickname Chick, short for "chicken Koop." It stuck for life.

He received his medical degree at Cornell Medical College, choosing pediatric surgery because so few surgeons practiced it.

In 1938, Koop married Elizabeth Flanagan, the daughter of a Connecticut doctor. They had four children ? Allen, Norman, David and Elizabeth. David, their youngest son, was killed in a mountain-climbing accident when he was 20.

Koop was appointed surgeon-in-chief at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia and he also served as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

He pioneered surgery on newborns and successfully separated three sets of conjoined twins. He won national acclaim by reconstructing the chest of a baby born with the heart outside the body.

Although raised as a Baptist, he was drawn to a Presbyterian church near the hospital, where he developed an abiding faith. He began praying at the bedside of his young patients ? ignoring the snickers of some of his colleagues.

"It used to be said in World War II that there were no atheists in foxholes," he wrote in 1973. "I have found there are very few atheists among the parents of dying children.

"This is a time when religious faith can see a family through trying circumstances."

MacFarlane doesn't mince words at Oscars

With jokes about domestic violence, breast-baring actresses, picking up Sally Field and a presidential assassination, Seth MacFarlane certainly didn't go soft during his first turn as Oscars host.

MacFarlane has the good looks and suave manner of a typical show host, but he was a nontraditional choice for the Oscars. His creative calling card is behind-the-scenes work, as maker of the TV show "Family Guy" and movie "Ted." He tried to soften it with self-deprecation, but MacFarlane quickly proved a polarizing choice.

After MacFarlane appeared uncomfortable telling jokes in the opening monologue, he brought on William Shatner via video hook-up for an extended riff on Shatner as a time traveler appearing from the future trying to save MacFarlane from himself.

It sent MacFarlane into some high concept comedy. He was shown in a song and dance routine, backed by the Los Angeles Gay Men's Chorus, naming famous actresses and the films where they displayed their breasts. During a quick cutaway, Charlize Theron ? one of the actresses named ? did not appear amused.

In another skit, scenes from the movie "Flight" were performed by sock puppets. An overly long skit ? again designed to illustrate MacFarlane's "bad taste" ? showed him wearing a Flying Nun costume in an attempt to pick up Sally Field backstage.

MacFarlane drew groans with a reference to pop stars Rihanna and Chris Brown, back together as a couple four years after a domestic violence incident involving the two.

Talking about the movie "Django Unchained," MacFarlane called it "the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who's been subject to unthinkable violence. Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie."

MacFarlane drew more groans from the audience during a discussion of the movie "Lincoln" and actors who had portrayed the 19th Century president.

"I would argue that the actor who really got inside Lincoln's head was John Wilkes Booth," MacFarlane said.

He seemed to anticipate and delight in the response. "150 years and it's still too soon, huh? I've got some Napoleon jokes coming up."

In his opening monologue, MacFarlane delivered a quick, knowing poke at the academy for snubbing Ben Affleck as a best director nominee for the movie "Argo." He referred to the movie's story about an undercover mission to rescue Americans trapped in Iran during the 1980 hostage crisis.

"The story is so top secret that the film's director is unknown to the academy," MacFarlane said.

He joked about "Lincoln" best actor nominee Daniel Day Lewis' habit of staying in character during filming days even when the cameras were turned off, addressing him: "If you bumped into Don Cheadle in the studio lot, would you try and free him?"

MacFarlane appeared to loosen up once his opening routine was over. He drew some laughs with a handful of solid jokes when talking about Quvenzhane Wallis, the 9-year-old best actress nominess for "Beasts of the Southern Wild. "George Clooney smiled at a joke about Wallis being a future dating partner.

The puppet teddy bear of "Ted" even got in a few Jewish jokes during a routine with Mark Wahlberg. The bear claimed to be Jewish, which he thought was a prerequisite for working in the film business.

"I was born Theodore Shapiro and I would like to donate money to Israel and continue to work in Hollywood forever," the bear said.

"You're an idiot," Wahlberg retorted.

Some of MacFarlane's jokes drew rebukes by tweeters, while his supporters countered that the Oscars should have known what they were getting when hiring him. In the weeks before he took the stage, MacFarlane frequently predicted he would be savaged by critics. His opening routine with Shatner even had the "Star Trek" actor displaying a supposed headline from the future saying MacFarlane was the worst Oscars host ever.

And it was difficult to tell how much he was joking when he introduced Sandra Bullock for an award presentation.

"Our next presenter portrayed a raging alcoholic in the movie '28 Days,' which is kind of a weird coincidence because I'm going to be playing one in about an hour and a half," he said.

Lyoto Machida pulls out split-decision win over Dan Henderson at UFC 157

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Lyoto Machida took a split decision over Dan Henderson in the co-main event at UFC 157 on Saturday. The judges saw it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 for Machida.

Machida was elusive as usual in the first round, but Henderson was able to sneak in and land a few kicks and punches. At the end of the round, Machida took Henderson down with a leg trip and landed strikes.

The second round showed Machida still being elusive and keeping his distance from Henderson. Machida tried for a front kick several times, but couldn't land it. Meanwhile, Henderson couldn't land much.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

Henderson is known for his big, overhand punches. Most of the time, when he throws it, it can mean the end of a fight. However, he had trouble getting close enough to Machida for the overhand to work.

In the third round, Machida moved in for a takedown but ended up with Henderson on top. Henderson used elbows from the top, but Machida was able to get out with less than two minutes left in the fight.

Before the fight, UFC president Dana White said that the winner of this bout will get the next title shot. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will put the title up against Chael Sonnen in April, but the next fight will likely go to Machida.

[Also: Josh Koscheck suffers upset loss]

Machida was once the UFC light heavyweight champion, but lost the title to Rua in 2010. Since then, he has wins over Randy Couture and Ryan Bader, but losses to current champion Jon Jones and Quinton Jackson. It will be his third chance at the light heavyweight title. He won it with a knockout of Rashad Evans in 2009, but lost to Jones in 2011.

Henderson had a long layoff between fights. His last bout was one of the best in MMA history. In November of 2011, Henderson defeated Mauricio Rua in a five-round decision. Since then, Henderson had a fight lined up with Jones in September, but had to pull out at the last minute because of a knee injury. His record falls to 29-9. He's 42 years old, and against Machida, looked slow and old for the first time in his career.

A little crazy about El Loco | The Clause

Saturday, February 23rd, 2013

C NAK'S El Loco is ready to cater to your eating needs everyday.

The replacement for Cookie Mill may not create delectable dessert options, but it certainly can fill you with a delicious meal and a fun place to eat.

Walls lined with autographed sports memorabilia, big screen televisions and pictures of former race track greatness, C Nak?s El Loco provides a great atmosphere to watch a game, grab a bite and hang out with friends.

Fairly-priced food, much in thanks to the 15% discount students receive, comes out quickly and is freshly cooked. Most meals range range from $5-$10, including the price of your drink, and have multiple variations of food to offer. The service is very friendly, with staff swooping both behind and outside of the confines of the service counter to offer help wherever they can.

Staff not only take orders but are ready to bring food to the tables of waiting guests.

Mexican or American classics with a twist, El Loco does it all. With multiple options ranging from a burgers and fries to combination dinner plates served with rice and beans, and one can?t forget the burritos. The variance of food doesn?t only reside within the hours of regular service. Breakfast options span from pancakes, eggs and bacon to breakfast burritos that have been rated as the best in town by Yelp commenters.

As a trio [who is the trio?] we were thrusted into a community atmosphere where regular dining tables had been cleared aside in favor poker tables to house a friendly game between friends of the owner and patrons.

Ordered were two combination plates and the ?Loco Burger.? In an attempt to garner a taste of El Loco, we all got something different to decipher what the new sports grill has to offer. The chile relleno combination plate and enchiladas combination were both very filling and for their $6.95 price tags, definitely worth every penny. The ?Loco Burger? isn?t your run of the mill burger?it is actually served sub style on a longer bun much like the ones used for Burger King?s original chicken sandwiches? and piled high with toppings.

Also ordered were the fried zucchini, which paired along with the name El Loco doesn?t sound promising, but were the most palatable part of the meal. Served stick-style with ranch this battered green veggie is quite amazing, even with mexican food as the main course.

It may not be the favored classic of an ice cream cookie sandwich, but El Loco is definitely a welcome addition to a shopping center already littered with many eatery options.

Firefox phones coming this summer

(AP) ? Mozilla, the non-profit foundation behind the popular Firefox Web browser, is getting into phones. But it's not stopping at Web browsers ? it's launching a whole phone operating system.

The Firefox OS will land in a crowded environment, where many small operating systems are trying to become the "third eco-system," alongside Apple's iOS and Google's Android. Together, those two account for 91 percent of smartphone sales, according to research firm IDC.

Mozilla has an ally in phone companies, who are interested in seeing an alternative to Apple and Google. Thirteen phone companies around the world have committed to supporting Firefox phones, Mozilla says, including Sprint Nextel in the U.S. Phones are expected this summer in countries like Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Poland, and Spain.

travel & leisure: Planning Your New Mexico Hunt

One of the number one attractions in the Albuquerque area is a murder mystery dinner event. Become a lead detective and find out the secrets of Rosenburg and Greenglass over a delicious meal prepared just for you. Previous visitors rave that the event is a smashing success every time. It's entertaining, filling and enlightening.

Whether you are planning your first hunting trip to New Mexico or you are returning again there are a few things to keep in mind when organizing your adventure. Firstly, know the law.

Weapons of any sort have specific and weighted regulations placed upon them, especially firearms. Do a little research into what types of gun and weapon laws exist in your own state, for the federal government, airlines, in New Mexico and even in the city of Albuquerque itself before you attempt to transport these weapons from place to place and from state to state.

The reason is for convenience and to save you money. As counter intuitive as it sounds, it's more convenient for you to take a carry-on rather than check a bag (when flying) or lugging another suitcase along then it is to spend less than an hour in the middle of your trip to wash everything.

Come during the winter time to be dazzled by the breathtaking snow covered trees. There are so many things to do throughout the entire year.

After you are familiar with the gun laws that you will have to abide, consider accommodations that you will have to meet. Most outfitting services, if you choose to hire one, will provide their own form of accommodations whether that is a lodge, trailer or tent.

Drop in to visit the animals and plants at the Albuquerque Biological Park. The park is a museum made up of four different entities: the Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Botanic Gardens, Rio Grande Zoo and Tingley Beach. The zoo covers over 64 acres with more than 2.5 miles of paths to get lost on. Seek out the elephants, giraffes, lions, snow leopard, gorillas and zebras.

Once accommodations are ensured, plan out what personal gear you will need to bring with you on your hunting trip. Once again, a little homework will go a long way in helping you prepare.

Study the weather patterns of the area you will be hunting and plan accordingly. Albuquerque and the surrounding area have a wide range of weather throughout the year so your preparations should adjust according to the time of year you hunt.

When you hand wash your clothes in the sink, you can pack half the clothes you would use for the week. It takes a little work, but it can be worth it if you're trying to cut down on the number of clothes you bring with you. Ramada is dedicated to helping travelers ease the burden of packing for their week long trips. They are part of the Albuquerque hotel scene in New Mexico.

Fortunately there are many such Albuquerque hotels around town that can accommodate a tired traveler. Do your research and find one close to where you want to spend your time.

2 adults, 2 kids missing after abandoning sailboat

By Ronnie Cohen, Reuters

SAN FRANCISCO ? A sea search was under way late Sunday for two adults and two children missing after sending a distress call that their sailboat was in trouble south of San Francisco, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The 29-foot craft was about 65 miles off the coast of Pillar Point, at the northern end of Half Moon Bay, when a member of the crew radioed late Sunday afternoon that the vessel was taking on water and that its electronics were failing, the Coast Guard said.

About an hour later, the vessel operator reported that the four people aboard the boat, two of them children under the age of 8, were abandoning the craft, and the Coast Guard lost radio communications with them.

The Coast Guard said in a statement that the four people from the missing vessel, believed to be named the Charmblow, might have made it into a makeshift life raft, but that their fate was not known.

Coast Guard aircraft and sea vessels conducted several searches of the area without success, and additional Coast Guard resources were to join in the operation, the agency said in its statement.?

Did South Korea Help North Korea Light Obama on Fire in This Video?

In today's tour of state-sponsored propaganda: the link between video games and Korea's propaganda factory, how the end of Olympic wrestling brought Iran and the U.S. together, and China cracks down on food ? not hackers.?

RELATED: In China, Hillary Gets Tough on North Korea, Syria, and Iran

North Korea Sets Barack Obama on Fire

It was around two weeks ago when one of North Korea's official propaganda sites decided to imagine an American city (which sort of looks like New York City) on fire and under attack ? all to the tune of "We Are the World." That video was promptly removed when the makers of Call of Duty discovered that North Korea's disinformation machine was using images from the video game. Now the regime is back with this:

RELATED: Americans Think Iran Is the U.S.'s Top Enemy, China Second

RELATED: Five Best Friday Columns

Here's the text of that video, via NK News:

North Korea has succeeded in proceeding with this nuclear test despite the United States? increasingly unfair bully activities against North Korea. That United States that has no respect to others nor appreciation to equality?

It is not incorrect to state that the United States strong hostility policy and endless violence toward North Korea in the past 70 years has helped North Korea become one of the world?s strongest military power states.

Words spoken by the United States, a country that uses the law of jungle as the law of survival for fitness, is meaningless. As a result, North Korea?s high level nuclear test conducted against American imperialist invaders is a nuclear deterrent that protects our sovereignty.

Thus, the United States has practically guided North Korea towards nuclear testing and therefore needs to be considered as an American virtue.

North Korea?s third underground nuclear test! Let it be known once more that this is strictly our practical counter-measure for North?s safety and to protect its sovereignty from the aggressors. It is also a solemn warning that time is no longer on the side of the United States.

The people are watching. America should answer.

Charming. Really. As some have pointed out, the music isn't a creepy instrumental of "We Are the World" but rather the soundtrack to dorky video game?Elder Scrolls 4, which was made in 2006. Which is actually pretty strange: North Koreans don't exactly have access to video games like?Elder Scrolls. So who's making them? The Washington Post's Max Fisher explains?that South Korean sympathizers may actually be colluding with the South Koreans on this particular piece of propaganda. Fisher writes:?

That should both help to explain the video games clips and tell you something about those South Korean sympathizers. Per capita sales numbers show that South Koreans are some of the most vociferous?video game consumers?in the world, so it?s not surprising that they might reach for hit computer games to put together these videos. North Koreans, on the other hand, almost certainly do not have access to these games, nor even to computers sophisticated enough to play them.

Iran and the U.S. (Wrestling Teams) Have an Alliance

We were sort of surprised by this story, which we found on Iran's Press TV:?

RELATED: China Lands an Ai Weiwei Scoop, North Korea Cooks Some Fish

Iran and the U.S. don't really see eye-to-eye on much. That said, we were interested to see what our wrestling team was doing with Iran's. What/who were they siding against? We clicked further and, well, it's not as juicy as you think:?

It's about the whole controversy over wrestling getting ousted from the Olympics. "We'll be standing arm-in-arm with Iran, and we?ll be standing with Russia as we will with lots of other countries," said Mitch Hull, the national teams director for the United States. He added, "Those [countries] really do make a difference because politically we?re not always on the same page, or politically with Russia, but in wrestling, there?s no doubt that we are all together in this effort and we consider Iran one of our strongest allies in the sport of wrestling." That isn't exactly nuclear proliferation or disarmament.?

China's Army Is Only Eating Leftovers

China?has repeatedly denied that it had anything to do with all those hacks on U.S. companies and that the Chinese army has anything to do with employing the so-called Comment Crew. Well, to be fair, it's not like anyone accused of almost 10 years worth of cyber espionage is going to cop to it that easily. What the Chinese do want you to know about their army is that they're eating leftovers. Waste not, want not, we guess. Here's the report from Xinhua:

Well, if the hackers are indeed secretly part of the People's Liberation Army, just know they aren't going to be eating well from here on out.

Chitika: Galaxy S III and iPhone 5 web traffic nearing a 50/50 split

At this point most realize that Android and iOS are the dominant players in the mobile world. Looking at bit more specific and in terms of Android and popularity, we are often talking about Samsung. And not only Samsung, but the Galaxy S III. In this case, Chitika, the online advertising network recently took a closer look at the amount of web traffic that was being generated between the Galaxy S III and the iPhone 5.

iphone_5_galaxy_s_iii_2-580x435-540x405

Chitika looked at these devices because they are both considered ?top of the line? and considered a sample of ?tens of millions? of US and Canadian smartphone mobile ad impressions originating from their ad network. The sample period ran from February 1 through February 9. Basically, the amount of traffic being generated by each device is near equal. According to the data provided by Chitika, the Galaxy S III is at 49 percent while the iPhone 5 has the slight edge at 51 percent.

While we always hope to see the Android devices come out on top, we should point out that the Galaxy S III has gained some ground. Chitika did a similar study back in October and at that time the iPhone had an 8 percent lead over the Galaxy S III. Going at this rate, we may see the Galaxy S III out on top next time around. It was also noted that when combined, these two devices accounted for 13 percent of all smartphone web traffic in North America.

Otherwise, in addition to pitting the Galaxy S III up against the iPhone 5, Chitika also looked at Samsung and Apple as a whole. In this case, the two companies combined accounted for 61 percent of all smartphone web traffic in North America. This was a 1 percent drop from the October study, however it looks as if Apple?s market share may be the cause of that drop. Chitika noted that they showed Apple as dropping from 46 percent to 41.5 percent with Samsung actually increasing from 17 percent to 20.6 percent.

Dozens of pro-Dorner protesters rally at LAPD HQ

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Dozens of protesters rallied outside Los Angeles police headquarters Saturday in support of Christopher Dorner, the former LAPD officer and suspected killer of four who died after a shootout and fire this week at a mountain cabin following one of the biggest manhunts in recent memory.

Protesters told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/11Ndm6i ) they didn't support Dorner's deadly methods, but objected to police corruption and brutality, and believed Dorner's claims of racism and unfair treatment by the department. Many said they were angered by the conduct of the manhunt that led to Dorner's death and injuries to innocent bystanders who were mistaken for him.

Michael Nam, 30, who held a sign with a flaming tombstone and the inscription "RIP Habeas Corpus," said it was "pretty obvious" police had no intention of bringing Dorner in alive.

"They were the judge, the jury and the executioner," Nam said. "As an American citizen, you have the right to a trial and due process by law."

During the hunt for Dorner, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck called for Dorner's surrender and said he didn't want to see the suspect or anyone else injured.

Dorner was already believed to have killed three people when he was cornered Tuesday at the cabin near Big Bear Lake, and during the standoff shot and killed a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy, authorities said.

Only after calls for surrender and use of milder tear gas did deputies launch pyrotechnic gas canisters into the cabin, and the subsequent fire was not intentional, the Sheriff's Department said.

Dorner died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the end of the standoff, sheriff's officials said.

The 33-year-old has already inspired a burgeoning subculture of followers. While most don't condone killing, they see him as an outlaw hero who raged against powerful forces of authority, and some even question whether he really died.

Tributes include a ballad titled "El Matapolicias," or "The Police Killer," penned by a Mexican crooner with lyrics paying homage to Dorner, and a YouTube clip showing excerpts from a video game titled "Christopher Dorner's Last Stand Survival Game" whose opening frame declares him "A True American Hero."

(AP Photo/Arshad Butt)

(AP) ? Angry residents on Sunday demanded government protection from an onslaught of attacks against Shiite Muslims, a day after 81 people were killed in a massive bombing that a local official said was a sign that security agencies were too scared to do their jobs.

Saturday's blast at a produce market in the city of Quetta also wounded 160 people and underlined the precarious situation for Shiites living in a majority Sunni country where many extremist groups don't consider them real Muslims.

Most of the dead and wounded were Hazaras, an ethnic group that migrated from Afghanistan over a century ago. Shiite Muslims, including Hazaras, have often been targeted by Sunni extremists in the province of Baluchistan where Quetta is the capital, the southern city of Karachi and northwestern Pakistan.

At the blast site, members of the Hazara community helped authorities dig through rubble to find the dead or survivors. Most of their efforts were focused on a two-story building that was completely destroyed. More than 20 shops nearby were also demolished.

Clothing and shoes were scattered through the concrete rubble, broken steel bars and shattered wooden window frames littering the streets.

One of those helping, 40-year-old Qurban Ali, was instructing young people to be patient and careful while removing the rubble, lest they hurt themselves or survivors still buried in the debris. His cousin Abbas was still missing after the blast.

Like many Hazaras, he lashed out at the people who perpetrated the violence.

"Who are these people who made us Hazara so grim and sad? Why are they after us?" he asked. "Not one month or week passes here without the killing of a member of the Hazara community ... Why is the government ? both central and provincial ? so lethargic in protecting Shiites?"

Near the rubble, a group of more than 50 women were wailing and beating their heads in mourning.

On the road to the neighborhood where the attack occurred, Hazara youth burned tires and chanted for the arrests of the killers. A number of Shiite groups also staged a sit-in and were demanding the immediate removal of the chief secretary of Baluchistan and the top police official, said Rahim Jaffery, who heads a Shiite organization called the Council for the Protection of Mourning.

"We are demanding the city (protection) be handed over to the army so that the killing of Hazara Shiites can be stopped," he said.

Jaffery said a mass funeral for the victims had been planned for Sunday afternoon but all Shiite groups were meeting to decide whether to stage a protest similar to one in January when they refused to bury their dead for four days.

That protest led the prime minister to sack the chief minister of the province and his cabinet and put Governor Zulfiqar Magsi directly in charge of the region ? a move that many Shiites thought would help protect their community. But the governor's comments revealed his frustration at a job growing ever more difficult.

Magsi said the blast was the result of a failure of the security and intelligence agencies in the province.

"Officials and personnel of these institutions are scared (of the terrorists). Therefore they don't take action against them," he said in comments that were broadcast on local television.

A militant group called Lashkar-e-Jhangvi called one local television station to claim responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan's intelligence agencies helped nurture Sunni militant groups like Lashkar-e-Jhangvi in the 1980s and 1990s to counter a perceived threat from neighboring Iran, which is mostly Shiite. Pakistan banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi in 2001, but the group continues to operate fairly freely in their war against Shiites.

Last year was particularly deadly for Shiites in Pakistan. According to Human Rights Watch, more than 400 were killed in targeted attacks across the country. The human rights group said more than 125 were killed in Baluchistan province, most of whom belonged to the Hazara community.

Human rights groups have accused the government of not doing enough to protect Shiites.

A Visit To Forever Florida Eco Safari Through Photos

Forever Florida ? Through Photos

You?ve seen us zipline here, you?ve seen us ride the zip line roller coaster, and now Ashley has taken the safari. Here is a post about her experience at Forever Florida.

By: Ashley

I was a little nervous about traveling to Kissimmee pregnant. Not because I had any pregnancy concerns, but more because I knew I would miss out on some of the more adventurous things. You might remember Louise posting about her own experience at Forever Florida. She was able to take on their zip line adrenaline rushes like a champ! I wasn?t sure what experience would be waiting for me when we visited Forever Florida.

As soon as you enter the Forever Florida refuge, you can?t help but feel a little calmer and a little more peaceful. While it?s true that they have one of the most impressive zip line experiences, their wildlife safari is the complete opposite ? a relaxing and awe-inspiring ride through some gorgeous Florida wildlife. At first I was a little disappointed to miss out on the zip line course, but after taking the safari, I realize I didn?t miss out on anything at all! Instead, I had a great experience with a fantastic guide and learned SO MUCH about Florida! Here is a little peek at what you can see on the Forever Florida Safari.

The lovely Leslie, my guide through Forever Florida.

Google hosts Glass Foundry in SF and NYC, giving developers early access to its wearable computers

A couple of weeks ago, Google held hackathons in San Francisco and in New York City. This wasn?t your normal hackathon ? rather, it was by invitation centered around the soon-to-be newest device in the company?s arsenal: Google Glass.

During these so-called Glass Foundry events, a small group of developers who had signed up for Google?s Glass Explorer Program were able to spend two days working with the wearable device and the API the company is developing. In the end, more than 80 ways to use Glass were built and everyone who demoed received a special edition glass bar that identifies them as ?Pioneers?.

Google says that eight teams received the grand prize: a free Glass Explorer Edition (pre-orders for an alpha version at Google I/O cost $1,500.)

With these Glass Foundry events, Google found that it was a great chance for its engineers to work next to developers on the Glass and API components to help make innovate on this new form of wearable technology.

Little by little, details are slowly starting to emerge about Google Glass. Last month, in a company filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Google listed that the device would have a Broadcom 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g WiFi radio paired with a Bluetooth 4.0 + LE module. Many have also become to recognize the device based on seeing co-founder Serge Brin. He was recently spotted wearing Google Glass in a New York City subway.

For those interested in developing for Google Glass, the next opportunity will be at South by Southwest at a session called ?Building New Experiences with Glass.?
