(AP) ? With Cincinnati and Syracuse tied and the clock ticking down in the final minute, the Orange's Jerami Grant drove the lane, and when his shot didn't fall arms flailed all around the rim trying to corral the ball.

Somehow, it trickled in with 19.4 seconds left and No. 3 Syracuse escaped with a 57-55 victory over No. 21 Cincinnati on Monday, its second scintillating win in three days.

"We didn't want to lose," said Michael Carter-Williams, whose dagger 3-pointer from the top of the key tied it at 55-all with 80 seconds left. "None of us like losing. We wanted to do anything to win that game. We picked up our intensity and our energy. We should have found that in the first half."

Syracuse had trailed by seven points with just over 5 minutes left, rallying for the victory in the final minute just as it had at then-No. 1 Louisville on Saturday in a 70-68 win. Carter-Williams had a go-ahead 3-pointer with 5:28 remaining, and his steal and slam dunk put the lid on that one as the Orange beat the Cardinals.

"Louisville was a tough, gritty game. We're banged-up and sore," Carter-Williams said. "To come back one day later and beat Cincinnati is a great feeling. We were a little fatigued. Now we get some rest."

C.J. Fair was credited with the game-winning tip but admitted afterward he wasn't sure who hit the ball.

"There were bodies down there and the ball just went in the hoop," Fair said. "I just raised my hand. I thought I did it, but maybe I got help. I don't know."

The Orange outscored the Bearcats 13-4 over the final minutes and Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin wore a frown after his team's third loss this season by two points or less.

"It was a batted ball in the air by three guys ? two of their guys and one of our guys ? that just happened to go in the basket," Cronin said. "I'm not giving him a tip-in, not when our guys were trying to hit it the other way. Stuff happens. We didn't get the stops defensively down the stretch. We got out-executed."

Cincinnati's Cashmere Wright missed a 3 from straight on with 2.9 seconds left, allowing the Orange to escape with their 35th straight win at home, the longest active streak in Division I.

Syracuse (18-1, 6-0 Big East), tied for third in the rankings with Kansas, is the only Big East team with an unblemished conference record and is 28-1 in regular-season play in the Big East the past two seasons, that lone loss coming at Notre Dame exactly one year ago Monday.

The Bearcats (16-4, 4-3) had won straight. They lost on the road for the first time in eight games.

Carter-Williams had 16 points and seven assists and Brandon Triche had 13 points for the Orange.

Wright, who sprained his right knee Tuesday in a win over DePaul and did not play in Cincinnati's overtime victory against Marquette on Saturday, finished with five points on 2-for-13 shooting. He was 1 of 8 on 3s.

Sean Kilpatrick led Cincinnati with 21 points and JaQuon Parker had 11.

Syracuse's James Southerland, tied for second on the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game, missed his third straight game because of an eligibility issue. He was in street clothes on the bench.

Cincinnati played the shot-clock game with its deliberate half-court approach and kept the game close despite a poor shooting performance in the opening half.

Trailing by just a basket at the break, the Bearcats started the second half with a 12-2 spurt keyed by consecutive 3-pointers from Parker when he was left unguarded in the right corner.

A high-arcing 3 by Kilpatrick was the fourth make in five tries from long range for the Bearcats and gave them a 36-29 lead with 13:46 left.

Carter-Williams responded with seven straight points, his 3 from the top of the key making it 36-all midway through the half.

Kilpatrick's sixth 3-pointer of the game and a layup by Cheikh Mbodj completed an 11-4 spurt that gave the Bearcats a 49-42 lead with 5:44 left.

Triche, who helped boost Syracuse at Louisville with 23 points, then hit two straight jumpers and fed Grant for a slam dunk to draw the Orange within 54-50 with 3:17 left.

After hitting 5 of 7 from behind the arc against Louisville to keep Syracuse in the game in the first half on Saturday, Triche was 1 of 6 from long range against the Bearcats and wasn't nearly so effective until the game was on the line.

"We're going to need him to do that," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said of Triche. "He's got to think that way. He's proven he can do it. He's got to take it to another level."

GUEST BLOG: Starting a business from ASOS Fashion | Careers

With the current economy squeezing every penny out of our pockets, hundreds of people have turned to themselves for employment by starting their own business. A lot of these start-ups come through our marketplace system and are very successful both on a small and a large scale. It?s very possible that if you?re keen on fashion that you?ve thought about the prospects of having your own fashion business. So here are some of the key points to consider when going through the start-up process.

Funding and Taxes

There are a variety of government run organisations that are available to help you start up your business however when initially starting up its likely that you?ll be investing your own money. To do this you will first have to plan your budget and then create a system to keep a handle on your finances. The use of a spread sheet to keep track of your cash flow as well as a physical file to store your important documents such as receipts and purchase orders should be enough to be able to calculate your assets and liabilities. All of this stored information will be needed when you come to look for an accountant.

Branding

Branding is possibly the most important factor when starting up a new business as a weak brand can?t carry a good product. You should aim to cater to the 3 R?s of branding which are Reach, Recognition, and Reputation.

Business Plan

When you need additional funding for growth, you?ll need a business plan to show your investors that your business is worth their investment. Your plan should contain the following key areas as a minimum:

  • Mission statement
  • The industry in which you will operate
  • Your target market
  • Direct competitors
  • A marketing plan that includes products, pricing, sales and distribution
  • Financial plan
  • An executive summary.

This is an essential part of the start-up process especially when making the transition from a lean business to an expanding business. There are plenty of organisations that provide advice on business plans including the Prince?s Trust.

Creating a Presence

Regardless of your product or your budget, you?ll need to get into the public domain in order to reach your audience. Fortunately, the internet makes this easier than it?s ever been.?

You?ll want to secure your online domain before you?ve mentioned your brand to anyone outside your close friendship circle to avoid someone else grabbing it first. A domain can be bought extremely cheap with some being available for as low as ?6.99 on various domain purchasing websites. If you don?t yet have the funds to build your website, buying the domain can still be useful to keep on hand whilst selling in a retail space like ASOS Marketplace until you?re ready to take the next step.

Showcasing Your Creations

Now that you?ve made some small sales and hopefully re-invested the money to secure inventory it?s time to push to get your brand seen by a wider audience. There are a few ways you can do this; you can place advert at your university for students that would like to be involved in the launch of a fashion brand. The same principle can apply with a photographer however it could be wise to play it safe and secure a professional just to make sure your designs are seen in their best light. Putting effort into how the product is portrayed online will improve the overall experience of the consumer on your website and hopefully increase sales. Launching a pop-up boutique in the heart of a city is also a great way to generate new sales and get your brand seen in a hurry. These boutiques often arouse curiosity and the idea of being amongst the first on side with a new brand is an exciting prospect for fashion consumers.

Workout at the Beach!

by Mackenzie M. January 22nd, 2013 | Share

beachEven though most of the country is in the midst of a deep freeze, before long it will be time for a long day out in the sun by the seashore. For those fortunate enough to live near a balmy beach all year round, the sand and water provide a great outdoor workout space. Even for those on vacation, a couple of days working out in the sand will do wonders for your muscles. For the ultimate outdoor workout, head to the nearest beach!

No matter what part of the country, it is common to see people jogging across the sand on nice days. While this may look like the typical jog, sand provides an incredible amount of resistance that will burn calories and build muscles exponentially faster than a run on pavement. It is also great for cardio.

For inexperienced beach runners, be sure to run only until your leg muscles start to burn. Slowly build up beach running abilities to avoid pulling or damaging any important muscles. Vacationers are often caught by surprise at the intense workout provided by the sand and surf. Even a twenty minute beach run is sure to blast fat and build muscle in no time.

Many fitness publications recommend doing other sorts of muscle building exercises on the beach as well. Completing these exercises three to four times a week paired with a healthy diet will sculpt a beach body in no time. To begin, try lunges and squat jumps in the sand. These exercises are targeted at the glute muscles and are extra effective in the sand. Scissor jumps require the person to get into the lunge position, and then jump while switching legs. Similarly, for board jumps, simply jump forward as far as you can and repeat. The resistance provided by the sand is a great way to build leg muscles.

Anyone who has been swimming in the ocean can attest that bouncing up against the waves actually takes a considerable amount of effort. Simply wading in shoulder deep water and bouncing lightly propelling with your feet during each wave works the ab muscles significantly. Find an area of safe water with a mild current and simply move up and down with the waves as they come up to the shore. The resistance from the water is similar to lifting weights or doing crunches. Swimming laps along the shoreline is another great way to build muscles; however, this is recommended only for strong swimmers and only on days with manageable currents.

Beach workouts are guaranteed to yield amazing results. Beachgoers in California and Florida can attest to the intensity of a beach workout; however, with all of the sun and salt water, be sure to stay hydrated and use sunscreen. The sand is a much more difficult surface than in the gym, so be sure to take extra precautions. Finally, be sure to workout on a beach near a lifeguard, especially when entering the water. Otherwise, enjoy the sand and surf during your next beach workout!

GOP eyes new election laws

(AP) ? After back-to-back presidential losses, Republicans in key states want to change the rules to make it easier for them to win.

From Wisconsin to Pennsylvania, GOP officials who control legislatures in states that supported President Barack Obama are considering changing state laws that give the winner of a state's popular vote all of its Electoral College votes, too. Instead, these officials want Electoral College votes to be divided proportionally, a move that could transform the way the country elects its president.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus endorsed the idea this week, and other Republican leaders support it, too, suggesting that the effort may be gaining momentum. There are other signs that Republican state legislators, governors and veteran political strategists are seriously considering making the shift as the GOP looks to rebound from presidential candidate Mitt Romney's Electoral College shellacking and the demographic changes that threaten the party's long-term political prospects.

"It's something that a lot of states that have been consistently blue that are fully controlled red ought to be looking at," Priebus told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, emphasizing that each state must decide for itself.

Democrats are outraged at the potential change.

Obama won the popular vote with 65.9 million votes, or 51.1 percent, to Romney's 60.9 million, or 47.2 percent, and won the Electoral College by a wide margin, 332-206 electoral votes. It's unclear whether he would have been re-elected under the new system, depending upon how many states adopted the change.

While some Republican officials warn of a political backlash, GOP lawmakers in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania are already lining up behind proposals that would allocate electoral votes by congressional district or something similar.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he "could go either way" on the change and doesn't plan to push it. But he said it's a reasonable issue to debate and that he prefers that leaders discuss it well before the next presidential election.

"It could be done in a thoughtful (way) over the next couple years and people can have a thoughtful discussion," Snyder said.

Republican leaders in the Michigan Statehouse have yet to decide whether to embrace the change there. But state Rep. Peter Lund, a Republican who introduced a bill to change the allocation system two years ago, said some Republicans might be more receptive to his bill this year following the election.

"We never really pushed it before," he said, adding that the bill wasn't designed to help one party more than the other.

Democrats aren't convinced. And they warned of political consequences for Republicans who back the shift ? particularly those governors up for re-election in 2014, who include the governors of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, among others.

"This is nothing more than election-rigging," said Michigan Democratic Chairman Mark Brewer.

Each state has the authority to shape its own election law. And in at least seven states ? Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida and North Carolina ? Republicans control both chambers of the state legislature and the governor's office.

Already, Maine and Nebraska have moved away from a winner-take-all system to one that allocates electoral votes based on congressional district.

"This is a concept that's got a lot of possibility and a lot of potential," said Washington-based Republican strategist Phil Musser, acknowledging that the debate would "incite different levels of partisan acrimony." Musser also predicted that more pressing economic issues would likely take priority in most Republican-led statehouses.

In Pennsylvania, Senate Republican leader Dominic Pileggi this week renewed his call for the Republican-controlled Legislature to revamp the way it awards electoral votes by using a method based on the popular vote that would have given Romney eight of the state's 20 votes.

Democrats quickly criticized it as partisan scheme.

"It is difficult to find the words to describe just how evil this plan is," said Pennsylvania state Sen. Daylin Leach, a Democrat. "It is an obscene scheme to cheat by rigging the elections."

Gov. Tom Corbett, who supported a related proposal from Pileggi last year, had not seen the new plan and could not say whether he supports the new version, the Republican governor's spokesman Kevin Harley said.

In Wisconsin, Republican Gov. Scott Walker has said that changing how electoral votes are allocated was an "interesting idea" but that it's not one of his priorities, nor has he decided whether he supports such a change.

It's gotten a lukewarm reception in the Republican-controlled Legislature as well. No proposal has been introduced yet and no lawmaker has announced any plans to do so, but the state Assembly speaker, Robin Vos, first proposed the change back in 2007.

"I am open to that idea," Vos said in December as lawmakers prepared for the start of their session. "But I would have to hear all the arguments."

All 10 of the state's Electoral College votes went to Obama last fall under the current system. If they were awarded based on the new system, the votes would have been evenly split between Obama and Romney.

Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett sent an email plea urging people to sign a petition against the change: "We can't sit silently by as they try to manipulate the democratic process for political advantage," Barrett wrote. "We can't let them attack the very democratic institutions and rights that others have sacrificed so much to gain ? just because they don't believe they can win in a fair election fight."

So far, Republicans have only advocated for the change in states that have supported Democrats in recent elections. The view is predictably different in states where the Republican nominee is a cinch to win.

"The Electoral College has served the country quite well," said Louisiana GOP Chairman Roger Villere, who doubles as a national party vice chairman.

He continued: "This is coming from states where it might be an advantage, but I'm worried about what it means down the road. This is a system that has worked. That doesn't mean we can't talk about changes, but we have to be very careful about any actions we might take."

Should the Auctioneer consider such damage likely to occur, it may require the buyer to deposit such sum of money with the Auctioneer, by way of security for the costs of reinstating that part of the premises likely to be damaged by the removal of a lot, as the Auctioneer may require. Should the buyer refuse to deposit such monies, the Auctioneer may refuse the buyer access to the seller's premises for the purpose of collecting all or any of the lots it has purchased, or rescind the sale of such lot.

By placing a Bid on a lot, the buyer represents, warrants and undertakes that it has the authority and capacity to enter such Bid and close the transaction and that any Bid that it makes constitutes an irrevocable offer to buy the lot in question for the full amount of the Bid.

8. International statutory compliance exclusion

comply with all current applicable legislations in any relevant jurisdiction and reasonable instructions by the Auctioneer in relation to the removal/disposal of waste including hazardous waste.

Participants agree to comply with all applicable export or import control or related laws or regulations and not to violate any applicable local, state, national or international law, statute, ordinance, rule or regulation. Participants acknowledge that the Auctioneer is not the exporter of any asset unless expressly stated.? The Auctioneer gives no representation or warranty concerning and has not conducted any investigation to ascertain which items, if any, constitute, for example, ?Restricted Technology? for US law purposes or whose export is otherwise restricted under applicable law. The Auctioneer and the seller reserve the right to cancel or rescind any sale in an Online Transaction at any time if either of them ?determines, in its absolute discretion, that the sale does or may violate applicable export or import control or related laws and regulations.?

9. Intellectual Property Rights

BOJ eyes open-ended asset buying, agrees new inflation goal

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's government and central bank have agreed to set 2 percent inflation as a new target next week, when the Bank of Japan will also consider making an open-ended commitment to buy assets until the target is in sight, sources familiar with the BOJ's thinking told Reuters.

The central bank will also discuss at its policy review on Monday and Tuesday, scrapping interest it pays on banks' reserves, a move that will nudge money market rates to zero, according to the sources.

Faced with relentless pressure from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to do more to pull Japan out of deflation, the BOJ is expected to double its inflation target and ease policy again at a two-day policy review that ends on Tuesday.

While the most likely option would be for the BOJ to top up its long-standing asset buying programme, central bankers will likely debate other measures such as open-ended asset purchases, to live up to market expectations for bolder monetary stimulus.

Any new initiatives would surprise investors, possibly putting the yen under more selling pressure and further boosting Japanese stocks, which have hit their highest levels in nearly three years on hopes of bolder policy measures.

The BOJ and the government are finalizing a joint statement they plan to issue on Tuesday, which would include 2 percent inflation as the bank's policy goal, deputy economics minister Yasutoshi Nishimura told Reuters.

"Governor (Masaaki) Shirakawa has been saying that 1 percent inflation would be in sight before long but we have not reached that stage yet," Nishimura said.

"If we share 2 percent inflation as a common objective, we expect the BOJ to do something very aggressive."

The statement will not set a specific deadline for achieving the target and leave the central bank freedom to decide on what steps to take to achieve it, Nishimura said.

But the government will examine how much progress the BOJ is making on achieving the target through its top economic panel, which the central bank governor attends regularly, a sign that pressure for bold monetary stimulus will persist.

MORE UNCONVENTIONAL STEPS

Abe, who led his Liberal Democratic Party to a landslide victory in a December 16 election with promises of aggressive budget and monetary stimulus, has suggested adding job creation to the BOJ's policy goals and making 2 percent inflation a medium-term goal that should be achieved in two to three years.

Both are problematic for central bankers, who argue that monetary policy alone cannot achieve those goals and are wary of committing to binding targets and deadlines.

Koichi Hamada, Abe's economic adviser and a vocal critic of the BOJ, kept up the pressure, saying the central bank should not set a deadline in expanding monetary stimulus as long as Japan remains in deflation.

Aware that investors have already priced in the new inflation target and another expected increase of 10 trillion yen ($112 billion) in the BOJ's asset buying and lending scheme - since October 2010 its main policy tool - central bankers are discussing other unconventional steps to maximize market impact, sources told Reuters.

One option would be to replace incremental increases in the asset programme with a U.S. Federal Reserve-style open-ended pledge to continue buying assets until the inflation goal is within reach, without setting a deadline for completing the purchases, the sources said.

Another idea would be to pledge to maintain the balance of the programme even beyond its end-2013 deadline, they said.

The BOJ will also consider scrapping the 0.1 percent interest paid on financial institutions' reserves held with the central bank, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. That rate has effectively served as a floor to money market rates and kept them from falling to zero.

Such a proposal from BOJ board member Koji Ishida was voted down by 8-1 at the December meeting, but another board member, Sayuri Shirai, said in a recent speech that the idea was worth considering as a way to further push down interest rates and help further weaken the yen.

The new government's push for more public spending - it approved 10 trillion yen in extra spending last week - and aggressive easing has helped reverse the yen's gains, setting off stock market rally led by exporters and construction firms.

But many economists warn the stimulus may give the sluggish economy only a temporary jolt at best if Abe's government fails to follow through with politically more difficult economic reforms needed to lift Japan's long-term growth potential.

They also warn the push to reflate the economy long-trapped in sub-par growth could backfire if the new government's medium-term fiscal plan due in mid-2013 fails to convince markets that it can get Japan's ballooning debt back under control.

The yen's recent declines, driven by expectations of aggressive monetary easing, have drawn complaints from countries like Russia and Germany, worried about a destabilizing currency devaluation.

Shirakawa met with Finance Minister Taro Aso and Economics Minister Akira Amari on Friday to narrow their differences over the statement they aim to issue next week. The ministers are due to fine-tune the statement with Abe once he returns from a trip to Southeast Asia, according to a government source.

As politicians continue to pile pressure on the BOJ, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde warned against excessive government meddling in monetary policy.

"Monetary policy with a different inflation target is in and of itself certainly a good and interesting project if associated with clear independence of the central bank," she said.
